Tip of the Day — August 1
💡 Save Before Every Lock
Every lock's linkage pattern is fixed — test each plate once to see what moves, note it down, then reload and solve with the correct sequence. Untrained characters only get 2 mistakes. Push a pin to the edge (position 1 or 7) and the lockpick breaks. Train with Fingers in the Old Camp. Try the Lock Solver for help.
What to Do Right After Starting
Your first character will probably die to a Scavenger within ten minutes — that's normal. The Colony does not care about you. Here's what the game doesn't tell you.
From the Beach to Old Camp — Free Loot
Diego gives you a tutorial quest at the exchange point — do it. Along the path, grab: Old Sword (under the hanged man), Club (near Juvenile Scavenger corpse), Hunter's Knife (same path, give to Drax for a free Shortbow). There's an underwater cave in the river near Drax's camp — swim in for a Rider Bow, one of the best early ranged weapons.
Near Old Camp, find a guard complaining about a ring he dropped in the swamp — two minutes south, return it for your first real ore. Pick every herb you see. King's Sorrel, Dragonroot, Swampweed — they stack infinitely, weigh nothing, and cooks/alchemists pay better than regular merchants.
Combat: Don't Face-Tank Anything
At level 1, a single wolf can kill you in three hits. Core loop: lock on, backpedal until they whiff, step in for 1-2 hits, back out. Don't combo. Each enemy type has a different attack rhythm — learn them one at a time. If it has more legs than you or glows in the dark, run.
Wolves hunt in packs — see one, assume three more nearby. Creep forward, pull one, retreat. Shadowbeasts will delete you at low levels. Just sprint and find a ledge to climb.
Picking Your Faction
All three camps let you complete quests before committing — so you can test each one first. For the full comparison (including exact join requirements, magic caps, armor rewards, and the interactive quiz), see the Complete Faction Guide.
Quick summary: Old Camp for first playthroughs (Diego leads, fire magic, clear path). New Camp for archer/economy builds (best rewards, water magic). Swamp Camp for the most unique experience (Templar spellsword, psionic magic).
Make a manual save before swearing allegiance. This is the single most important save in the game — it lets you replay other factions without redoing the early game. Use the Faction Quiz if you're stuck.
Lockpicking
The Remake uses a sliding plate puzzle (4-7 plates per lock, gold pins, interconnected plates). For the full system breakdown — training costs, solving strategy, mistake tolerance, lockpick sources — see the Complete Lockpicking Guide.
Speedrun / Multi-Playthrough Tips
⚡ Fast Chapter 1 Route (8 hours)
Diego guides → Old Camp safehouse → Scatty (parry, 10LP+50ore) → Fingers (lockpicking, 10LP+100ore) → Mordrag to New Camp (2,000XP free) → Swampweed smuggling → Baal Parvez to Swamp Camp → Complete all three camp quests → Manual save at decision point.
📊 Optimal LP Formula
Levels 1-30: each stat costs 1 LP. After level 30: costs skyrocket. So dump ALL LP into your main stat before 30. Trained lockpicking (10LP) is always the #1 priority. Then weapon skill. Then main stat to 30. Secondary stats after 30.
⏰ Achievement Route
Playthrough 1 (Old Camp/Fire Mage): Insomnia Champion + Mercy Over Madness + Mud Freak. Playthrough 2 (New Camp/Water Mage): True Stranger + Anatomaniac + Map Sniffer. Playthrough 3 (Swamp Camp/Templar): all faction-exclusive achievements. Key save: Chapter 1 faction decision point (perm save).
🔧 Essential Mods
World Map with Markers, Highlight Items Lite, Lockpick Settings, Custom Keyboard Mapping, G1RL (Mod Launcher). All on Nexus Mods.
Weekly Tips Series
🗡️ Combat Week: The Parry Is Everything
Unlock the parry from Scatty (10 LP + 50 ore) as your first combat upgrade. A perfect parry negates all damage and opens a riposte window. Practice on Kirgo near Scatty until you can parry 3 swings in a row — that's when you're ready for real fights. Most enemies have a tell before their heavy attack; the parry timing is right as the weapon starts moving.
🔐 Lock Week: Linkage Mapping
Before solving any sliding-plate lock, spend one attempt mapping the linkages: click each plate once and note which others move and in what direction. Reload, then solve with the map. This works on every lock including the Collapsed Tower — just budget your 2-6 mistakes carefully.
💰 Economy Week: The Ore Loop
Early game: ring quest in the swamp (2 min) → pick every herb (cooks pay more) → Snaf's recipe (3 free meals daily) → sell raw materials to the right merchants. Mid game: Old Mine crawler mandibles (50+ ore each). New Camp: swampweed smuggling doubles your profit.
⚔️ Faction Week: Scout Before You Commit
Don't join a faction until you've completed all three camps' pre-join quests. Each camp's quests give XP, gear, and insight into their culture. The Old Camp has ~7 pre-join quests, New Camp ~6, Swamp Camp ~5. Do them all, then save before the oath.
🧪 Exploration Week: The Hidden Chests
At least three hidden chests in the Valley are only reachable via wall climbing. Train the skill early and check every cliff face that looks climbable. One chest near the Old Mine entrance contains a unique ring that boosts mana regen.
🛡️ Survival Week: Cook Everything
Every camp has a cooking pot. Cooked meat heals twice as much as raw and sells for more. Before a dungeon run, cook all your raw meat — it's effectively free healing potions. Buy herbs and craft potions if you have alchemy trained.
