❓ Frequently Asked Questions
The most frequently asked questions about Gothic 1 Remake
How is this game different from the original?
Rebuilt by Alkimia Interactive (Unreal 5). Key changes: 4-direction combat with lock-on, sliding-plate lockpicking (vs old tumblers), modern graphics. Keeps the no-minimap, no-marker design.
Can you switch factions?
No. Your faction choice after Chapter 1 is permanent. However, you can complete all three camps' pre-quests before committing. Manually save before the final oath — reload that save whenever you want to experience another faction.
Which faction should I pick first?
Old Camp (Fire Mage) = easiest first run, Diego guides you. New Camp (Water Mage) = best economy, no Chapter 4 banishment. Swamp Camp (Psionic) = most unique, magic capped at Circle 4.
How does lockpicking work?
The remake's lockpicking is a sliding plate puzzle. Each lock has 4-7 plates, each with 7 holes and one pin. Push all pins to the center (hole 4) to solve it. The challenge is that moving one plate affects others — some same-direction, some opposite, some independent. Save first, test the linkages, then start with the most-connected plate. Find Fingers at the Old Camp for lockpicking training: Professional 10 LP+100 Ore (4 mistake tolerance), Master 20 LP+200 Ore (6 mistake tolerance). See the Lockpicking Guide.
How do I heal?
Sleep is the primary healing method — every 3 hours awake banks 1 hour of healing reserve, max 8 hours. Cooked meat heals more than raw (use camp cooking pots). Snaf at the Old Camp gives 3 free meatbug stews daily after completing his recipe quest. Potions and healers only appear in the late game — don't count on them early on.
How do I save?
F5 quick save, F9 quick load — these should become muscle memory. The game's autosaves are very sparse. Always manually save before key moments (before lockpicking, before talking to critical NPCs, before entering unknown areas, before faction oath). Manual save slots are unlimited, so don't keep overwriting the same one.
How do I earn money (Ore)?
New Camp quests pay the best, plus you can smuggle swampweed for profit. Old Camp lets you sell herbs to cooks for steady income. Swamp Camp gives 3 free swampweed daily from Fortuno. Best early deals: pick every plant you see in the wild — they weigh nothing — and cooks/alchemists pay more than regular merchants. Loot dropped weapons and armor to sell to blacksmiths.
How long is the game?
Main story only takes about 30-40 hours. A full exploration, all-side-quests experience runs around 60-80 hours. Chapter 1 (before choosing a faction) is the longest section — plan to spend 20+ hours running all three camps' quests. 42 Steam achievements total.
What platforms are supported?
PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, released simultaneously on June 5, 2026. See System Requirements for specs.
Is there a minimap?
No. This is a core design philosophy from the original — you navigate by memory, landmarks, and buying rough hand-drawn maps from NPCs. Turn on "item outline highlight" in accessibility settings to make finding things in the dark a bit easier. Graham (near Old Camp's north gate) and Dexter (market) sell maps.
What happens after Old Camp exile in Chapter 4?
After exile, seek refuge at the New Camp or Swamp Camp. Diego will secretly give you a route map and some gear. New Camp is the choice for most Old Camp players — Water Mage Saturas will take you in. Your training may be interrupted — if the Old Camp trainer was the only one for a skill, spend all your LP before the exile.
Should I kill or spare Mordrag?
Absolutely do NOT kill him. This is the single most impactful decision in the entire game in terms of cost-benefit. Persuade him to leave the Old Camp and he'll escort you safely to the New Camp — he kills enemies along the way and all XP goes to you (2,000+ XP one way). Killing him = lose a free guide + all New Camp introduction quests + massive early XP. If you already killed him, reload. If you overwrote the save, you're on your own.
What is the fastest way to farm Ore (money)?
Fastest: 1) Ring quest (swamp near Old Camp) 2) Pick every herb — cooks pay more 3) Snaf's recipe = 3 free meals daily 4) Join New Camp for swampweed smuggling. Late-game: Old Mine crawler mandibles.
Does the remake have online/multiplayer?
No. Gothic 1 Remake is a purely single-player game. THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive have not announced any multiplayer plans. If you want to talk about the game with friends, head to Discord or r/worldofgothic.
What known bugs should I avoid?
Known 1.0 issues (mostly fixed in 1.0.2): 1) Delivering the Focus Stone in Chapter 3 without Lester causes him to become permanently stuck — the Special Fragment quest is voided 2) In very rare cases, sleep healing doesn't trigger — leave camp and re-enter to fix 3) Getting caught lockpicking by an NPC may permanently disable that lock. Keep the game updated to the latest patch.
Is Swamp Camp worth it with magic capped at Circle 4?
Yes. Psionic magic (Sleep, Fear, Charm, Control) is available early — at least one chapter earlier than the other two camps' magic. And psionic spells ignore enemy armor — devastating against heavily armored foes. Many of the toughest bosses are far easier with Fear/Control than trading fireballs. The Templar's melee+magic hybrid playstyle is also the most unique of the three factions. The Circle 4 cap does fall off a bit in the endgame — but it's strong enough through the early and mid game.
Is there an official wiki or database?
There is no official wiki. The community wiki is at gothic.wiki (unofficial). This site is built from actual playthroughs — every page is content we've tested in-game, not copied from previews. You can also check English guides: Game8's Gothic 1 Remake Wiki and IGN's guide pages both have detailed English quest chains. The Steam community also has active discussion boards and guides.
What is the best class/build for a first playthrough?
Strength + One-Handed Weapons is the safest. Train the parry from Scatty (10 LP + 50 ore), then push Strength to 30 before level 30 (when stat costs spike). Add lockpicking from Fingers (10 LP + 100 ore) — it's the single best LP investment in the game. This build works for any faction and never feels weak.
How do I get a bow early?
Return Drax's Hunter's Knife (found on the path to Old Camp) — he trades it for a free Shortbow. For a better bow, swim into the underwater cave near Drax's camp to find the Rider Bow (needs Dexterity 14). Best early ranged option.
What is Diego's List and who should I give it to?
Diego's List is a quest item from the Test of Faith / Old Mine questline. The reward differs by who receives it: giving it to Diego earns more XP (around 1,750), while Lares gives less (around 750). Save before choosing and decide based on who you want to build reputation with.
Are there companions I can recruit?
Yes. Diego, Milten, and Gorn join you at key story moments — they're especially useful during the Minecrawler Nest quest in Chapter 2. NPCs can die permanently in the remake, so don't send companions into fights they can't win.
How does the faction choice affect the ending?
Your faction determines which allies you have in the final Orc Temple confrontation, your dialogue options with the Sleeper, and the ending scenes. Old Camp and New Camp both get the "highest" endings with Circle 6 magic potential; Swamp Camp's psionic path caps at Circle 4 but offers unique Sleeper-related choices. Each ending is worth seeing on a separate playthrough.
What should I do with the Chromanin and Cavalorn books?
The Chromanin series (6 volumes) unlocks the "True Stranger" achievement and powerful rewards — collect them across the Valley, but they're chapter-locked so grab each before advancing. Cavalorn's Bestiary (5 volumes) teaches unique hunting skills and unlocks "The Anatomaniac." Both are missable, so prioritize them.
Can I respec my character?
No. There is no respec system in the game. Every Learning Point (LP) spent is permanent. This is why it's crucial to plan your build — levels 1-30 are the key window (stats cost 1 LP each), and after level 30 costs skyrocket. If you misallocate badly, you may need to restart.
What's the deal with the magical barrier?
The barrier is the central mystery of the game. It's a magical dome trapping everyone in the Valley of Mines. The New Camp's Water Mages are secretly studying it, and the ore in the valley appears to have a direct energy link to the barrier. The truth connects to the Sleeper and the final chapters — no spoilers here, but it's the core of the story.
How do I find the New Camp and Swamp Camp?
New Camp: complete the "Out of Sight" quest or let Mordrag escort you from Old Camp's south gate — he kills enemies and you get the XP. Swamp Camp: complete "The Cult's Recipe" quest to reveal its location, then find Baal Parvez near the Old Camp market for a safe escort through the dangerous marshlands.
Why do merchants' stocks reset?
Merchant inventories refresh at each chapter transition. This means permanent stat boosters like Dragonroot and Goblin Berries disappear if you don't buy them before advancing chapters. Always check merchants for unique items before progressing the main story.
