๐ Skills & Builds Guide
Stats, combat, trainers โ hard-won advice on what to invest in and what to skip
๐ Quick Reference: Optimal Investment Priority
If you've already beaten the game once, here is the priority order distilled from multiple playthroughs:
- Lockpicking to Professional first, always โ 10 LP for 4 mistake tolerance + no lock reset. Undisputed value.
- Main weapon training until core moves unlock โ One-handed = Scatty for parry, Two-handed = faction trainers.
- Push main stat to 30 โ 1-30 costs 1 LP/point, spikes after 30. Dump all LP into your main stat before 30.
- Maximize healing mechanics โ Snaf's 3 daily stews = infinite free healing. Pick every herb, cook all meat.
- Wall Climbing โ use wherever possible. Many hidden chests are only accessible via climbing routes.
Multi-playthrough tip: Running all three faction pre-quests perfectly in Chapter 1 takes about 8-10 hours. Save a shared save file at the "faction decision point" and just load it for each future playthrough โ skip the early grind entirely.
Attribute Overview
Each level grants +12 Health and 10 Learning Points (LP). From levels 1-30, each attribute point costs only 1 LP โ cheap. After level 31, LP costs spike sharply. So levels 1-30 are your critical character-defining window.
| Attribute | Effect | Cost Lv 1-30 | After Lv 30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Melee damage + weapon equip requirements | 1 LP / point | Cost spikes |
| Dexterity | Bow/crossbow damage, pickpocket success, ranged weapon requirements | 1 LP / point | Cost spikes |
| Mana | Spell pool. Only recovers through sleep โ no passive mana regen, no chugging potions to spam spells | 1 LP / point | Cost spikes |
| Health | Auto +12 per level, cannot be raised with LP directly | Auto | Auto |
Combat System
The Gothic Remake combat uses four-directional attacks (left, right, up, down). At the start your character is terrible โ clumsy swings, two-handed grip on the sword, no parry animation.
Parry must be unlocked through training. Find Scatty at the Old Camp training yard, spend 10 LP + 50 Ore on One-Handed weapons โ unlocks the full sword moveset including parry. A well-timed parry negates all damage.
Block only reduces damage, does not fully negate it. Dodge has invincibility frames when timed correctly.
Practice tip: spar with Kirgo near Scatty repeatedly โ he's a training NPC who won't kill you.
Essential Skills Breakdown

Magic by Faction
| Faction | Magic Type | Max Circle | How to Obtain | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ฅ Old Camp | Fire Magic | Circles 1-6 | Find Torrez, complete "The Price of Magic" quest (bring 2 wolf claws + 1 sheepskin). Teaches fireball and healing. | Highest destructive power among all magic systems |
| ๐ง New Camp | Water/Ice Magic | Circles 1-6 | Water Mage path. Grants 30 more attribute points than Fire Mages. | Ice crowd control is extremely strong โ freeze + damage |
| ๐ Swamp Camp | Psionic/Sleeper Magic | Circles 1-4 (hard cap) | Earliest magic access. Templar hybrid path. | Ignores armor. Sleep, fear, charm, control. Strongest early game, lower ceiling late game |
Healing & Survival
- Sleep healing โ every 3 hours awake banks 1 hour of healing reserve, max 8 hours
- Cooked meat โ heals more than raw meat. Use camp cooking pots to cook
- Snaf (Old Camp) โ after completing his recipe quest, gives 3 free meatbug stews daily
- Potions and healers โ only appear in the late game. Rely on cooked meat and sleep early on
Recommended Build Paths
โ๏ธ Warrior (Old Camp)
Strength to 30+ โ One-Handed โ heavy armor guard path. Learn parry from Scatty, lockpicking from Fingers. Most stable, highest-tolerance build for early game.
๐น Archer (New Camp)
Dexterity first to 30+ โ Bow skill โ light armor skirmisher. Train archery with Wolf, kiting is the core playstyle. Can also smuggle swampweed for extra income.
๐ฎ Templar (Swamp Camp)
Strength 20+ foundation โ moderate Mana โ Two-Handed + Psionic hybrid. Train weapons with Gor Na Drak. Psionic spells ignore armor โ highly effective in boss fights.
๐ง Water Mage (New Camp)
Early Dexterity to 20 for survival โ transition to Water Magic mid-game โ Circle 6 freezes the entire battlefield. Gets 30 more attribute points than other mage paths.
Leveling Iron Rules
- Lock in your direction by level 5. Strength, Dexterity, or Mana โ pick one main stat, don't spread evenly.
- LP from levels 1-30 is the most valuable. Don't hoard it โ spend LP on your core stat immediately.
- Master only one weapon type. Leveling both sword and bow means you're mediocre at both.
- Regardless of build, get Lockpicking to at least Professional. The 10 LP return on investment is undisputed.
- Cook your meat. Raw meat heals less and sells for less. Cooking pots are everywhere in camps.
- Practice with Kirgo. After learning parry from Scatty, spar with Kirgo repeatedly to internalize the rhythm.
๐น Dexterity/Stealth Archer Build (New Camp Recommended)
A pure-Dex glass cannon โ kiting from range means you never take damage, but get caught in melee and you're paper. New Camp is the ideal faction for this build.
| Stage | Weapon | Damage | Dex Req | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | Starter Bow | 20 | 10 | Old Camp Sly quest reward |
| Early | Rider Bow | 24 | 14 | Buy from merchants or find in the wild |
| Mid | Oak Bow | 52 | 38 | Buy from hunters or merchants |
| Endgame | Demon Bow | 85 | 70 | Deep inside the Sleeper Temple |
Core Skills
- Sneak โ learn immediately from Cavalorn or another stealth trainer. Reduces footstep noise by ~85% when active. Heavy armor and boots generate passive noise โ strip heavy gear before infiltrating buildings, or sleeping NPCs within 3 meters will wake up.
- Pickpocket โ pure Dexterity check (your Dex vs target's hidden alertness value). Early on, only target miners, apprentices, and low-rank rogues. Stay away from guards and templars.
- Lockpicking โ at minimum Professional. A broken pick makes a sharp noise (~10m radius) that can wake nearby NPCs.
- Acrobatics โ train with Buster at the New Camp, improves rolling and jumping for better survivability.
Stealth Mechanics Deep Dive
- Line of sight & lighting: Standing in shadows reduces detection chance by ~60%. Watch the eye icon above your health bar โ it must be fully closed to be undetected.
- Day/night cycle: Operate between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM โ roughly 90% of NPCs are in deep sleep with severely reduced perception.
- Armor penalty: Heavy armor = more noise. Strip down before infiltrating, carry only your weapon and lockpicks.
- Faction alignment: After joining New Camp, find Lares for Dexterity training, Wolf for Bow training, Wedge for Pickpocket and Lockpicking.
